A Not Very Far Poem by Mehta Hasmukh Amathaal

I had no courage to ask for any change
It was assuming with some thought with your age
I dreamed of having some sort of alliance
I had really wanted dependence and reliance

You had very long association with me from childhood
We had spent happy moments in the neighborhood
It had no bearing of our future relationship
Though we were attached loosely in friendship

I never tried to know or probe your mind
You were there at stone throw’s distance to find
I never thought of making you as permanent partner
Thought it was to happen sooner or later

It remained not as illusion but distant possibility
I had not thought of its probability
It did flicker in mind on several occasions
It only helped in strengthening the relation

I had no close shave off or sweet fight
You were through friend and always right
I wished not to loose you from my sight
Same thought troubled me too in night

As I was unaware of another side
The area of perception remained very wide
We had no time to converse seriously
Even though it harped on me continuously

It did occur to me sometimes
That same may be the case all the times
Possibly she may be thinking on same lines
Though I could notice only one side shine

Some possible forecast I could make
It seemed to me it would be easy cake walk
I preferred less and less acquaintance
It assumed significance with importance

I had to wait for right moment
I could see uneasiness and some movement
She would not concentrate and look around
I was sure something new may be found


It was her turn now
I had waited for it any how
I did not know how would she come forward?
But really waited for sweet and nice words

She managed finally and came closer
It was long wait but I was not looser
She whispered in ears and ran away
I was quite amused to find the way

It rang like bell in the ears
As it was recent not bye gone years
I wanted it for long time to hear
I could not guess how much happiness I bore?

Did you say it really?
Are you aware of it fully?
I may sink and not recover
You are with me however.. I pondered over it

I shall prove its worth
As you have come forth
Stay the same as you are
We are as close as were never far
