It's late...1969...
the sun's going down
as we turn west for the last time.
Driving this long black Caddy,
rolling along the boulevard of freedom at 30 cents a gallon -
step on the gas, unafraid of what must pass...
Enjoy the ride
in this cool dark lady; while
somewhere, way over 'there',
young men are dying,
and none of us really know why.
Back here we're feverishly trying
to spend the last of our freedom,
before our innocence says goodbye.
The end of a decade,
the last free age,
hitch-hikers, hippies,
free-thinkers, and Jesus freaks -
all original American prophets,
hanging on just outside of the cage;
while around the globe
everything's going down like that western sun,
and nothing will ever be the same
when it's done.
We'll keep riding in that Caddy...our last free ride,
long hair blowing in the wind,
not realizing: it'll never be this way, ever again...
we thought we were changing the world.... it was a golden time, and yet a hard time.... kinda like today!
To quote a piker I once read, They were the best of times, they were the worst of times.
I missed the 1960's but could tell you a thing or two about the 1660's. Our kids will be telling their kids how great the 2010's were.
I love this poem, and it reminds me of yesteryear, without a fear, how we all went both far and near....and did not realize that...'we shall never pass this way again...' Excellent words and thought....thank you!
The swinging sixties. What a time to be in. We had scandals and corruption. Unjust wars and drugs. But we also had Mary Quant, the Beatles, Bob Dylan etc. and enough gorgeous little dolly birds in mini skirts and aspects of free love to make it all worth while. Times will never be the same again,
Holy smoke. I just posted a comment on this poem then scrolled down and thete wad a very real feeling of deja voi.
To quote some piker I once read it was the best of times, it was the worst of times.
This poem has not been translated into any other language yet.
I would like to translate this poem
The 1960's, a great time in which to be young - I know, I was there! !
