who knew that what i'd see in you was gold wrapped in plain paper
or that I'd travel so far down the road to your door

I saw the storm clouds gather before the rain began to fall

I thought I was prepared enough to stand against it all

I want to wear you all around me
Your heartbeat, the clock of my eternity
I want your very breath to be my entire world.

I should have gone to bed with my dreams of you
Things that wouldn't happen but ease my tortured heart
I smile when I think of you this way, someone who loves me
Me, and not the image created in your mind.

I just want everything to go back to the way it was before
The world was bright back then with the blossoming of joy
Why must the happy things in life always be prone to change
I want you back, my boy

You were once a caterpillar

My heart was your chrysalis

At The Crossroad

who knew that what i'd see in you was gold wrapped in plain paper
or that I'd travel so far down the road to your door
but while i was adoring the beauty inside you
i didn't see the rock in the path that caused me to fall

my love and my enemy both wearing the same skin
my heart and my soul enmeshed in the struggle
crashing and bleeding while needing and soaring
and blessing and cursing the dynamics of it all

i held this indeterminate gift in my hands as i walked
with each step a miracle and a cause for rejoicing
and every misstep a pause to the sky for reflection
and guidance by the light that shone down from above

now I stand at a crossroad between logic and sweetness
each path a detour with potholes and loose footing
and in each hand is a compass pointing different directions
one leading to safety, and the other to love.

i squint and i pray and i love and i seethe
and i wish with every breath and cell of my being
to not have to choose but walk the way that i'm wanting
to follow the fragrance of my heart's deep desire

but the struggle gets fiercer as i stand at the point of no return
no war has been greater nor swords sharper
they draw blood as they battle for supremacy of direction
and in the tempest, blaze anguish to life like a fire.

time stands still
i catch my breath in a gasp as i hang at the yawning void
i can't fall
i must wait to see which direction wins.

so here i am with your face like a grail in the vapor
seeing but unable to reach or to touch
with what's in my hand threatening to disintegrate
and be carried away in the passing of the wind.
