Sankaranarayanan Madavu Poems

The journey is long, the sun is hot, but I feel like resting,
laying in the shade of a grand banyan tree
and falling into a slumber.
...

On my way home, I notice a scrap of paper, lying on the street.
It is inked beautifully,
but soiled and torn, as if with a message read umpteen times,
and left aside.
...

I had a feeling, I am still handsome
But the mirror shattered all my esteem.
Before me stood an old man,
his hair white, face wrinkled and eyes misty.
...

To have faith, that too in self,
It's great.
I lack it, I fear, as I always fail.
I meet Him, I plead Him, please lift me up, I have to face the world.
...

Wake up call
A little birdie chirping,
wake up all, the sun is in
the day is here, toil is near
...

A little girl,
crying in a cradle, a rag tied behind her mother,
and the mother,
in rags, her countenance miserable,
...

Wandering along the little brook,
gazing into the gurgling current,
I see the little floret, floating in the tiny stream.
...

I have to rise, whether sun or rain,
no scope for skulking, but have to shine.
Can rest or sleep throughout the night,
but be in time at dawn to lighten the horizon,
...

A prick on the skin matters not,
but in heart, it does,
the pain lingers long, though under wraps, often,
but raising its head when most unwelcome.
...

A little bird twittering beside my window,
the day dawning with her tune,
the sun smiling and shining.
showering the rays of golden hue,
...

I relax,
now it is peaceful, but cloudy
unlike the world in turmoil and busy.
I chance a short break to relax.
...

Little drops of tear she sheds, the little kid,
mother is not at sight.
Demons from the stories have devoured her, she fears.
She has to cry, call for help,
...

The moon, with friendly clouds,
playing hide and seek,
it's delightful.
The kid wants to join,

Miles To Go Before I Sleep

The journey is long, the sun is hot, but I feel like resting,
laying in the shade of a grand banyan tree
and falling into a slumber.

I smell the flowers abloom,
Bees are humming, leaves murmuring,
fish cooling the summer heat in the stream,
Golden clouds running above in a caravan,
and a little bird twittering, calling all to lullaby me into sleeping.

Like tears of toil, rain drizzles, waking me up,
and I know everything is just a dream.
No time to rest,
I have miles and miles to go before I sleep.

It's life, life of a common man who toils for his bread.
