When Your Child Is Born Poem by Randy McClave

When Your Child Is Born

When your child is born you must remember this
They are your love from the very first kiss,
When you brought them into this ugly world
Your heart and your soul and your emotions are all unfurled.
They are not a tool to get you what you want
Or to be used to trick or to use or to flaunt,
They have been given to be loved by you forever
Especially, by both the father and the mother.
Their needs and wants must always come first
Knowing this fact from the first time they are nursed,
And you will always promise them a better life
After the doctor removes the umbilical cord with a knife.
Your child must come before your partner or your spouse
They come first for dinner always in your house,
And if you don't have a spouse, but a partner instead
Then too that child is always the first one fed.
You want them raised differently especially if you were raised badly
You would happily give up all for them gladly,
Never would you ever put anyone in front of them
Never would you want their life, sad and grim.
While your child is still young growing into an adult
Putting anyone in from of them you see as an insult,
The only bars that you see or that you will excitedly go to
Are the bars on the crib that you place your baby into.
The only bottles that you worry or carry about now
Are the ones filled with milk from a cow,
And the hugging or kissing that you wanna be doing
It is with your child smiling, laughing and cooing.
When it is another Friday or a Saturday night
Being with your child will bring you your greatest delight,
And if you're a single or divorced father or mother
Being with your child, is your druther.
