When Life Hands You Lemons... Poem by Matt Mercer

When Life Hands You Lemons...

Up and down the boulevard
I walk it alone
Silently waiting
For them to come along
At times, I may appear quite fragile
And at times, I fight to keep my smile
But all along the boulevard
I wait for them...
...all the while

The people around me
Appear broken and bruised
Praying to god
So they'll be excused
And life becomes a burden
To those, who deny their way
They may escape the pain
But not the sins
For which they'll pay

In between the street lights
I find it hard to remember
How this all came to be
Under the bridge
Too dark to see
Grappling with the memories
During the blackness of the night
Struggling to find my conscience
In the midst of my fright

Each breath becomes a gift
In the sweetness of the air
The air we take for granted
Inhaled without a care
And why is the mind so polluted?
Rotting from the core
Playing silly little games
Dragging us down some more

Jealousy created its own rules
Telling grievous lies
To the unsuspecting fools
And time never pays attention
To the lives that lived so pure
Pulling away at their souls
Hoping nothing can become of their grace
A fool methinks, for it is love
Which he cannot trace
