When, I Leave The World Behind Poem by Mark Heathcote

When, I Leave The World Behind

What would I leave behind?
When I leave the world behind.

It's a question asked a lot …
It's not even an afterthought.

Poets want their words read
Long after they've been long dead.

Poets want to change the world
Make a mark with just the right verb.

Win the heart of a pretty girl
Turn dirt into the lustre of a pearl.

What would I leave behind?
When I leave the world behind.

I'd wish to leave one pristine gem
Yes, one singular poem from my pen.
