What Is Poetry Really? Poem by Cynthia Buhain-baello

What Is Poetry Really?

Writing is a craft that needs skill like carpentry,
Like trying to build a poem using words creatively.
There must be exquisite care in the verbal choice
For just like a house, each part has its own voice.

Writing a poem is more than words put into play,
Tossed here and there, with meanings in disarray.
While anyone can write varied words randomly,
A poet is one who can use them to create imagery.

A poet is one who can bring out the bright golden sun,
Hang the silvery moon in the sky when the day is done.
He can paint the verdant hills as though you were there-
And bring the scent of jasmine in the cool soothing air.

A poet is one who can soar the fathomless galaxies,
Make your dreams bloom or wither in miseries.
A poet is one who can hear the song of butterfly wings,
He goes in and out your heart.... to paint your feelings.

What is Poetry?
"Poetry is a form of literature, spoken or written, that emphasizes rhythm, other intricate patterns of sound and imagery, and the many possible ways that words can suggest meaning. The word itself derives from a Greek word, poesis, meaning "making" or "creating." Whereas ordinary speech and writing, called prose, are organized in sentences and paragraphs, poetry in its simplest definition is organized in units called lines as well as in sentences, and often in stanzas, which are the paragraphs of poetry.
