What Do You Hide Inside?

Kannada Composition by Kanakadasa
English Translation by C.P. Ravikumar

O mother, Goddess Uma Maheshwari,
Who bestows knowledge to the seeker,
Whom do you hide inside?
The son of the enemy of the God of Love,
Sporting a mighty elephant trunk,
The one who leads his groups with pride?

O he is the one with a dark face,
With ears the size of winnows,
And a molar that juts out wide
The son of the one with three eyes,
The one who owns a piece of moon,
His groups he leads with a stride!

He ties his dress
With a snake as a belt,
The bravest among the brave
Sporting a large belly,
The son of the throne-queen of Lord Shiva,
He leads the groups with a wave

He is a mountain of knowledge,
Has no desire for women,
A figure of letters is He!
He must be the one who serves
Adikeshava of Kaginele
Who serves the people with glee!

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Kanakadasa was a saint-poet of Karnataka, who lived in the 16th century. He was a devotee of Lord Adikeshava (Vishnu) of the villlage of Kaginele in Karnataka. A contemporary of Purandaradasa, he has composed numerous compositions that are sung even to this day. No Carnatic music concert is complete without a composition of Kanakadasa.

This composition is in praise of Lord Ganesha. Yet, it cleverly praises his parents - Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi. The poet questions Goddess Parvathi who she is carrying in her womb and goes on to describe the great son she will soon give birth to.

Ganesha is so called because he leads Shiva's attendants (groups) .
