Well Poem by Vera Sidhwa

Well

What If?

What if all the leaves on the trees
Were dollars galore?
And we could stuff them into our banks?
Then the entire world would be rich.

What if each of the drops in the ocean
Were sapphires galore?
And we could put them into our banks?
Then the entire Earth would be rich.

What if all the dirt on the Earth
Were laden out as pretty, shiny pennies?
And we could roll them in our banks?
Then the entire population would be wealthy.

But would that really be so?
There still would be the poor, the poorer
and the poorest.
And the rich, richer and richest.

We just can't let it work out
Can we?
