We Still Remember Poem by Mehta Hasmukh Amathaal

We cherished your life and ideals
But today they seemed unreal
Those were the days when you were hated
For freedom struggle where Indian were discriminated

It was bloodless war against mighty empire
And achieved for poor country to acquire
A nation to live with honor and pride
But alas! Fell short of expectation due to rule and divide

'Disband the political organization' was your slogan
You were for people and advocated the power to be given
Read elevation of villages to that of small model towns
Where everything was made as per need and owned

What a life Bapu (Gandhi) to remember and worship for noble cause
But it was not going to be so after deliberate pause
Politicians made it their safe heaven and you were shot
Real struggle started for power and was sought

Only Rajghat* is spared from encroachment
Not because of respect but can be noticed any movement
As prejudicial and shame for the entire nation
Such is the hollow show we are developing for the relation

Heritage place is occupied as show rooms
On the name of village industry to groom
A safe and refuge for traitors and scoundrels
Who wants to be appreciated to gain the laurels?

Strikes, hurdles, black marketing and hoarding
We all avail facilities and blossom for boarding
Lavish living and travel abroad for taking money out
Nothing is left to mention or specifically to talk about

For any failure we take your shelter
Use the name and launch the struggle for better
Not for people's cause or stability of the nation
But for entire political family to build the relation

We can't forget you Bapu* for such wonderful contribution
How could that have been made possible for national wealth distribution?
The poor are not disturbed at all and kept at bay
We have many weapons in our armory to stay

Today will be celebrated as Government programme
Children and employees may stay indoors or at home
Pledges will be reiterated and tune will be played
Next day it will be forgotten for people to remain dismayed
