We Pray Poem by Doris Clore Demaree

We Pray

A rich man stood where all could see
And prayed to God, 'Just look at me!
'I've kept your laws as best I could.
You've never seen a man so good.'
Jesus said to men that day,
'This is not the way to pray.'

Away from the crowd a poor man prayed,
'Forgive me God, for I have strayed.
My best is not good enough for thee.
Forgive me, God! Please forgive me!'
Jesus says to us: 'To really pray,
Ask God to help you every day.'
