Underground Waterway Poem by Justin Gildow

Underground Waterway

Falling and landing on the hard brick floor
I see that the only direction I can go is forward
I walk along until I turn left

I step
And the floor gives way under my feet
Luckily, I made it safely across

There's a pitfall in front of me
And a ledge sticking out

With a running start
I run and jump
Grabbing the ledge with my hands
Transversing right with the help of my hands

Finally seeing solid ground underneath me
I let go and walk out to this large area
This large place
This underground waterway

I notice the water that runs throughout this place
This water is deadly
Since I can smell poison from it
I must take my steps carefully
As I do't want to meet my untimely demise
in this poisoned drink

Walking along
The forces of Dracula seem to know I'm here
As I hear some animal groaning

Leaping out of the water
Into the air
And on to the ground with me
Lizardmen have come
Bearing swords, axes, and shields
While obtaining the ability to spit fire or spew
poison

Seeing now that this is going to be the way it is
in the underground waterway
I fight off and kill the lizardmen
One by one
Left and right

After that battle
I decide I want to spend as little time in this place
as possible
So I run instead of walk
Running up and down stairs
Jumping on and off broken bridges
And series' of other platforms
Climbing and hauling myself up with my hands
if I need to

In the final stretch
Before I leave this disgusting place
I notice that I'll have to shut off the waterfalls that
continue to bring poisoned water into this place
Walking along narrow walkways
Jumping across small platforms
And avoiding the spikes that crash down from
the ceiling

I quickly and calmly go about what I have to do
to get out of here
Shutting off the waterfalls one by one
Avoiding being seriously hurt by the spikes that
crash down from the ceiling
Jumping across the platforms one by one
And running past the lizardmen who wish to fight me

After all is said and done
I notice the exit in the distance

Finding solid ground once more
I walk along the narrow walkways
On either side of me are pools of poisoned water
And behind me are lizardmen
Trying to stay with me
Trying to fight with me
As I'm trying to stay away from them

The exit is only a few yards away from me
The lizardmen have given up on chasing me
And have gone back to areas in the underground
waterway
However, bats have flown in and are trying to attack
and annoy me

I kill each of the bats
And run towards the exit

Going through the door
I don't want to see the underground waterway ever
again
