Today I Do Not Mind Poem by Shalom Freedman

Today I Do Not Mind

Today I do not mind
That our universe may be only one of many
Or that it is expected to heat die in trillions of years
Or that all of us
Are small intervals in a story
With an impossibly large number of years both before and after us
Today I am here in my own small everyday life and worries
Nothing cosmic will depress me today
I am happily in the here-and-now of my own small years
Happy to think
That if the family record applies in my case
That I have give or take a few -ten years left
I have time to write the masterpiece
I have had fifty years to prove I can't write
And going on doing whatever it is I do now
Nothing great -nothing very significant
Just living
Ten more years perhaps
Of my own small existence
Until I do what so many friends have already done
Leave this world
To the regret
Of family and friends only.
