Today Poem by Randy McClave

Today

To my son, I will now say goodbye
To my son today I will sit and cry,
I thank you my son for the love and your living
And I thank you for your smiles and your giving.
Now I think of all the things that we've done together
As father and son without the mother,
With the travels and the adventures that we both had
Now as I reminisce, I feel glad.
Please remember that I was always there for you
Because for the longest time it was just us two,
And whenever you needed help or just a helping hand
I swear I always did my best to help you stand.
Many times I did without so that you could have more
Many times I suffered severely, so that you wouldn't feel poor,
I had nothing, but I always wanted you to be happy and to smile
For you I have even walked barefooted over rocks for over a mile.
I was the best father that I could ever truly be
I always put you first even before my lovers, and even me,
And every promise that I made to you I always kept
And many times without you knowing it, I wept.
At you I never did get mad or did I ever scream or holler
Even when I gave you my very last dollar,
Judging or not believing you I always did forbid
Because, I believed that you needed anything more than I did.
To my son as I still sit here at my home all alone
As I still sit on my couch contemplating, just holding my phone,
I wished that you were here at my side, which is no lie
Because today my son…… I die.
