To My Mother's Memory (The Drop Of A Feather) Poem by Valsa George

To My Mother's Memory (The Drop Of A Feather)

Rating: 5.0

The dawn broke, tearing the dark shroud of gloom,
And lights turned on to greet another day,
Life taking its new course all around,
but in this room, life coming to an end!
No stir except the sound of faint breathing,
strangled hoarse within her feeble throat.
Walking over to the bed, I took her fragile hand,
and stroked it mildly in slow rhythm,
Smoothed the soft fleecy hair, lying dishevelled
that remained once so neatly combed.

I watched life gently slipping away,
The inevitable end to an eventful play!
Breaking all bounds, memories cascaded out,
and the mind changed into a river in spate,
Fondly surveyed her features and the face,
with a foreboding of never getting another chance.
Looked into the heart that held within,
an ocean of love that ebbed and swelled.
Words struggled to fly out from my lips,
Words never, ever said,
but took for granted that she knew.
I sensed the dampness on my cheeks,
and a lump forming within my throat.

This woman taught me once for all,
I could do what ever I set my mind to,
Who with wings out spread stood hovering,
Over her chicks when eagles swooped down.
Exhorted to brave daringly ahead,
through the dank and dark corridors of life
chasing the glimmer of light,
at the threshold of a brighter world.
Insisted on not to beguile the just,
But hold on to truth always.

I stood silent, my gaze fixed on the limp figure,
Now resting calmly on a propped up bed,
Her dried up bosom heaving high and low,
I knew her breath slowly dying down.
With a strained belch, she turned her head sideways,
With a sudden flutter, her sealed eyes were opened ajar.

Her benevolent eyes fixed on my face for once,
Did a smile fleet across that pallid face?
Oh! The eyeballs suddenly turned upwards,
And her mouth, slightly opened to let out the breath

She went noiselessly with so much ease,
like a feather, falling gently on the ground.

Vacantly I watched a solitary loon flying west ward,
and beyond the horizon it disappeared like a mote.

Valsa, I agree with Charles. This should have been a beautiful, unforgettable moment shared by the both of you. Many miss the opportunity of seeing their loved off- and bidding them goodbye in such a peaceful fashion. May you cherish those moments forever. I personally missed the opportunity to embrace such sacred moments, but was informed of the circumstances that surrounded my mother’s passing. Several attending nurses saw her spirit, as a mist, leave her body- floating out of the hospital window and going upward. It’s amazing how it resembles your mom’s exit. I enjoyed the poem, though very sad and touching, it was insightful. Thank you for sharing it.

Though sad and touching, the depth of your love and respect is shining through. The symbolism and imagery of those ending lines is a great final touch

this poem brought tears to my eyes, Valsa Mam. I understand how painful this situation would have been to you, as today even the slighest imagination of my mom not being with me, brings shiver down the spines. Beautifully written and i would say u were lucky to be with her during her last breath, which not every child gets.

I never felt myself so empty-handed after reading any poem...just like i'm feeling now...It has stirred something in me, some pain, the presence of which is the sign of life, it keeps me alive...; back in 1997, and 2010, i saw the same scene in the same room........as a mother is a universally shared relation, this pain is mutually felt and shared too...! ! ! just a sigh! ! !

The bird at last flew away leaving behind a helpless chic gifting her a colourful feather. Marvellous poem describing the last minutes of a dear life. A tribute filled up with emotion

Part - 1 The love and affection, care and stare of a mother is unforgettable. The death of mother gives her children a great shock. I lost my mother at the age of sixteen, I know how painful the moment of mother' s passing by. You have so touchingly and vividly inscribed this blue poem regarding your mother aptly. Here I want to quote some lines. Her benevolent eyes fixed on my face for once, Did a smile fleet across that pallid face?

A poignant write yet so beautiful. Each and every word touches the core of the heart. So vividly depicted as if I witnessed a peacefull passing away of a dear mother. Yet, beyond this scene, it captures the inherent love between a mother and daughter. A love that could never be conquered even the greatest of all storms.
