The Watchman And The Mountain Poem by Sameer Daniel Gardner

The Watchman And The Mountain

He stared intently at the mountain in the distance,
Hoping to see something new.
He had to stay there all night,
As the evening's thirst was quenched by the dew.

With no fatal weapon to keep intruders at bay,
He was a watchman in the true sense of the word.
His job started at the end of the day,
As sleep visited even the wandering bird.

His work was to go back there every night,
It was like he was living in his goal.
With no worldly ambition in sight,
Everyday he explored his soul.

He struck a conversation with the mountain one day,
How or why I cannot say.
Both talked about their 'stable' professional life,
Of unending patience and little strife.

'I stand with no ambitions or dreams'the mountain said,
'But that doesn't stop me from inspiring others who tread,
To scale me and celebrate with the sky,
I stand strong without uttering a sigh.'

Much impressed the watchman began to reply,
'I too am responsible for not letting dreams die,
I tell the people go chase you'r dreams then come and rest,
I'll watch over as you dream of another quest...'

At daybreak he said goodbye
To the mountain in his mind's eye

So the next time you pass a watchman by,
Treat him like an essential part of mankind.
For no matter how much you tread on your feet,
He has gone greater distances in his mind....
