The Surprise Party Poem by Imelda Ortega Suzara

The Surprise Party

The social laws form civilization.
Citizens repress primitive instinct,
Their shadows hiding cause for sensation.
A surprise party — salon as precinct —
The unwilling host to foreign strangers
Whose worldliness gained from travel and trade
And wealth… a lack of privacy angers.
But if they come from higher culture grade?
The time and culture in traditional
Polite, civilized, high class — a courtship
Delayed by guests so international.
Searching for the right wife who would worship…
His privacy versus publicity —
Who planned such a social atrocity?
