The Best Left Poem by Sara Militello

The Best Left

Rating: 5.0

The Best Left

Time alone allows for reflection
upon events that flee too fast:

Recalling the best of my life
even the hardships and strife
it comes to mind all that was
and is no more...

The love I have for one so dear
is true as truth can fly.
At first desire burned bright
as the brightest star in the sky.

Yet - how often love's fire, banked
is treated with poignant entreaties galore
fragile feelings the ashes
of a flaming passion spent.

Time is a friend that sustains love ~
tender acceptance soothing where
a treasured love still lingers there
adjusted to friendship-laced passion

double-linked with gentle respect
the best left glowing before
a warming hearth on a cold damp night
for love to spark into embers bright.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
What better thing for me to do on last day of 2016 when I was too wide awake to sleep, than think of love and loving?

It's now December 31, at 6: 24am and my thoughts drifted to some of the poems I've written through the years. One can trace my growth in understanding by the dates I give for the moment a combination of my thought processes became a concrete poem.

I tweak them now and then to make them reflect the emotion I tried to capture initially. I always remember what emotion or wish or even the reality of my experience up to that point, sparked the poem in the first place. Suffice it to say that even a thought or wish for a certain capacity either already developed on in process of development in our nature is the seed of fulfillment of that wish...

I think we often forget how important is a deep friendship between two who have fallen in love...I firmly believe a deep friendship is the ingredient that binds and sustains long married or committed couples as they grow old together.

It's in the interest of whoever may encounter this poem of mine, I share it to suggest that it's never too late to resurrect the love one has felt for someone dear to them, even if the parting was not totally satisfying at the time. Love does not have to die. It can warm the heart at any distant time frame; through recollection of the good times...
