Tepee Poem by Nassy Fesharaki

Tepee

Tepee

Two Natives, fire, pipe
Young listens, older talks

"I want to immigrate"
Young man says.

"That's where to? "
"Toronto, Canada"
"Why is so? "

And old waits
Just nodding; no answer
So old says:
"We're Incas; have Apu
Do you know? "
"Yes of course, that's our god."
"You know why? "
No reply

Same trend:
"Apu means the highland
Where you said is low land, good to farm
We, Incas, respect soil, respect land
Those people don't understand."
Young's silent, old goes on:
"With floods, disasters, they are damned."

Young man laughs
Then wakes up
The news confirming:
"Flood shocked Toronto"

In mirror is young man
Combing hair with whisper:
"Ancestors know better."
