Sweet Sorrow Poem by Barry Trembetzky

Sweet Sorrow

Rating: 4.5

Oh Sweet Sorrow
You are my constant companion
Uninvited you were born
Cast from irrational reason

Oh Sweet Sorrow
I heard the Sirens' call
Like a faithful dog I came running
To the bowels of Hades I did fall

Oh Sweet Sorrow
I ate from the forbidden fruit
Filling my belly with insatiable desire
Unable to gratify my earthly pursuit

Oh Sweet Sorrow
I touched Aaron's calf made of gold
As a Wall Street banker building a fortune
Untainted honor and virtue were sold

Oh Sweet Sorrow
I smelled the Angel's Trumpet's scent
Dreaming the life of a bon vivant bohemian
A wealth of abundant talent is never spent

Oh Sweet Sorrow
I looked upon Athena's silvery throne
Unwisely exchanging love with anger
The tender heart has turned to stone

Oh Sweet Sorrow
I drank the wine which did not belong to me
As I passed through the Gates of Eden
I cried out... Where is my Penelope?

Oh Sweet Sorrow
I found a place where from you l could hide
By impersonating the vulgar barbarian
Stricken down by hubris and selfish pride

In my quest I did not waiver
From seeking my inner bliss
Forsaking the long sought Savior
To quell the endless emptiness
