Square Poems 38: Pronghorn Acrostic

Rating: 5.0

Proud mother observed as he was born
Rain was dripping off her left horn
Only just twenty-three inches long
Not much more than seven pounds he weighed
Got to lie in the sun; there's no shade
Horses he outruns when one week old
Only the cheetah can run faster
Rampant killing was near disaster
Now space is gone; no more can be told

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
I call these square poems because they have the same number of syllables per line as there are lines in the poem. This one has nine lines, so there are nine syllables per line. Square poems do not have to rhyme (but it's more fun when they do)and they do not have to be acrostics like this one.

Newborn pronghorns will be about 23 inches long,17 inches high at the shoulder, and weigh about 7 pounds. By the time they are a week old, they can outrun a horse. They are the fastest animal on four legs, except for the cheetah. They have been clocked at slightly over 60 miles per hour.

Just like the bison, or American buffalo, millions upon millions of them were killed in the 1800's until they were nearly wiped out and laws were put in place to protect them. Now they have rebounded and most western states in the U.S. have hunting seasons for them.
