Six Feet Under Poem by Anamika Goswami

Six Feet Under

I looked at her, trying to remember.
I have seen her before but why can't I remember?
She stared back with unseeing eyes.
Ah! those eyes.. yes i know her..
The laugh lines around them..
I remember.. I look at her mouth
wonder if its still smiling?

She was very fond of her laughter.
Often laughing even in the middle of her anger.
'I laugh my pains away', she had told me once..
But not today.. just like her eyes, her mouth had
forgotten the curve of a smile.

I looked again and still couldn't help but wonder,
Is she her? Is she the same?
what happened to her?
I must have thought aloud...
Because someone whispered, 'don't you know? '
'she died last night, they are getting her ready to bury six feet under'.

And then I turned away from the mirror.
Finding my way back...
Walking on ghost legs that belonged to her in my other life.
