Sister Poem by Daniel Y.

Sister

In childhood we were close friends
we acted plays of untold glory.
we conquered ear with song and story.
we were a duet you see.
My little big sister, and me.
My little big sister, how did we fall apart?
friends from school you chose
to exclude me.
The veil of prestige you dawned
and it looked pretty on the outside.
I the younger, too young for you.
Rejected from your table.
You felt the weight of perfection.
Within the lines, color
according to number.
At your pink castle door I waited.
But it did not open.
It did not open
so I left.
And still it did not open.
You changed from skirts to pants
and back again.
You changed from architecture to
ultrasound.
You changed again.
Now that you’re a mother,
I think you understand better
than I ever could
That we never stopped
looking out for one another
out of the corner of our eye.
