Reaper And Elegist Poem by Granville Holt

Reaper And Elegist

What of Chaucer's use of vernacular?
Could it be that Rhyme Royal tells no tales?
Yet Petrarch survived Black Death to woo her
In secret. As poor Poe, with horror wails!

Let's go back one Sonnet to Ben Johnson
And own it! Write a "Shakespeare" word token.
Not the "Passion" of Christ, but for hearts broken!
Because best likes the best, as old John Donne.

Say, "Farewell! " to Wyatt's laws forever!
Even Spenser wouldn't mind ice and fire
Mused within Sir Sidney's lines so clever.
Forget all that! As Collins might say. Liar!

Blow out the lights! Put down iambic pen!
"Gray! " "It takes fourteen to come to this end! "
