I Know Why Grandma Cried Poem by Granville Holt

I Know Why Grandma Cried

In her early nineties, small and frail,
She kept a candle light in her eyes
For every visitor who'd stop by
Still able in body and soul
With indomitable spirit and will

At times as you spoke "hello‘s"
Or talked of life's little things
Yesterdays tears would well up
And a memory flood of years
Spill down her soft, age-lined cheeks

Memories of the Daughter
Who died much too young
Or a lost Son's smile she loved
Tiny twins she never got to hug
Precious souls her heart held beloved

Her lifelong Husband now long gone
Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren
Who gave her life a childs good grace
Tears for those who would remain
Those who must endure good and bad
Whose lives she prayed might know
The joys and happiness she had
And less of the pain

How I wish I could have
Listened to her starlit eyes
That last day
And heard the song
In her tears once more...
