Porch: Revisited Poem by bob barci

Porch: Revisited

I should sound asleep
dreaming of dreams
I’ll forget by morning.
But instead,
I sit here on the porch
watching the clouds move across the evening sky
and the heavy traffic going by in both directions.
Where could they all be going
at this time on a weeknight?
Inside, I am kept awake by heat
and new neighbors, both upstairs and down,
who think it’s perfectly normal and acceptable
to yell and scream at the top of their lungs 24hrs a day.
So far, only a couple
late night dog walkers passed by,
and neither one took note of me,
on the porch here, watching them.
I had thought
that an open window
would help cool the heat
and ease me into sleep.
Instead, the cool evening air
came in and provoked me.
It played with my senses
and now I sit on the porch
thinking of ways to stay here all night
and remember why I like to sit out on the porch.
