One Beautiful Flower Couldn'T Add Beauty To Flower Vase! Poem by Geetha Jayakumar

One Beautiful Flower Couldn'T Add Beauty To Flower Vase!

Rating: 5.0

One lovely bud bloomed into a beautiful flower today
In the valley of flowers
Very timid and shy
Lovely and glowing too
Quite different from others,
Different in shape and in color,
No pricking thorns had she ever.
Though she was quite different from others,
With no fragrance,
Was she blessed with.
This was the only thing she lacked in,
She couldn't add beauty to flower vase
With dignity, which was decorated
With many bright and colorful flowers,
Kept in drawing room!

Note: Hindi version: Ek Phool Jo Guldasthey Mein Na Saji!

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
This poem is written by me. First I wrote in Hindi then I converted into English. The meaning of poem goes this way
Flower here represent a married woman may be at her tender age. Fragrance meaning here is the child, she couldn't bear a child. Why I choose fragrance is that our generation keeps on continuing like fragrance keeps on spreading. No thorns means she was very good at heart, a well behaved, she never hurt anyone like thorns. Flower vase represents here either family or social circle, just because she was childless no one accepted her. Drawing room represents the public occasions or auspicious function. She was forced to stay away from all these functions as she was childless. I wrote this poem keeping all these things in my mind.

You have painted this picture so well in my mind. I am thinking of this one single rose with no thorns standing with more beautiful roses. All these roses so alive waiting to pose but seems not viewed by all. Thank you

It is the poet's turn to observe the state of the flowers. Maybe that one flower is not happy to be brought to the flower vase from its original state. To see the feelings of each thing is something amazing. Beautifully brought out in the poem. I can imagine the beauty of the original poem also

I'm so glad I read your notes about the poem. You've managed to write a sad story in such a beautiful way. I agree with Rajesh that education is needed to end such injustice.

Geetha, This is such a magnificent poem. I was reminded of both Keats and Burns while reading it. I enjoyed the Poet's Notes almost as much as the poem. Thanks so much.

Reminded me of Kalidasa's famous lines in Kumarasambhavam - the karnikaara (kanikkonna of Kerala) flower makes us sad due to its non-fragrance although it has all the beauty in the world (varnaprakarshe sati karnikaara, dunoti nirghandhatayaasmacheta) . Is the Hindi original yours?

Thank you Sir, for the valuable comment. Yes, this poem is written by me in Hindi first and english is the translation. I don't gave guts to fight for what's going on in society. But I have seen that widows as well as childless woman stay away from it. Now the things are changing as compared the past. We were just discussing on this topic and I thought I will write this poem.

The poignancy of a flower not able to showcase in the vase as it lacks fragnance is well portrayed in this poem. Waiting for the original version. Well written Geetha
