Once Close To The Sky Poem by Juan Olivarez

Once Close To The Sky

Rating: 5.0

Once close to the sky I heard,
The wind whisper in my ear.
My only companions some big black birds,
Soft gentle whispers, I could hear.

I looked around so high was I,
And the desert far below.
so high that I could touch the sky,
My spirit joyously began to grow.

And I felt free, surrounded then,
By the majesty of God.
to that high paradise, I now was kin,
Like a new born seed, in nurturing sod.

And the wind did whisper in my ear,
This is where you belong.
stay with us man, we hold you dear,
And listen to our song.

And I did stay, long as I could,
Within that desert paradise.
For my soul, it was the perfect food,
And so much beauty, for my eyes.

But like all things, it did not last,
For I have a roaming foot.
And I went away into my past,
All arguments now moot.

I long to see that mountain high,
And someday I know I will.
There the wind will whisper in the sky,
And God's voice, my heart will fill.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
The good lord had been very good to me. I have seen wonders all my life. I have even been down the throat of the Amboy Volcano in southern California. If you are ever in California, don't pass up seeing the great Mohave desert and it's snow capped mountains. You will feel like you are in heaven. You will want to stay, or return as soon as the good lord lets you. Maybe I will see you there.

What a beauty Juan! You've sung the song of my soul! I do hope to run into you a way out there, someday. - have you ever read the books: Desert Solitaire by Edward Abbey, or The Desert by John Van Dyke? Great books, that I beleive you'd appreciate my friend. -
