Nüremberg Poem by Gert Strydom

Nüremberg

How shallow it is, that in a city
where once Kaisers
on a throne did sit,
where the master painter Albrecht Dürer
aimed for the Promised Land
and the great poet Hans Sachs
spent time
to set images
to picture and rhyme,
Anti-Semitic laws were drawn up
and German war criminals
were brought to justice.

Yet the greatest criminals
never set their feet there
and left their nation
to carry their guilt instead
and most of them
now probably are dead.
