Mother- A Cold Day Poem by Sharath Sherry

Mother- A Cold Day

That warm smile
In those glittering eyes,
That comfort you cast
This moment! I shall seize
Seize forever

Because someday, it will be cold,
And that day I will be longing
Longing for your warmth
Yearning for your lap
To rest my head,
That day I will realize
How beautiful life was
And how beautiful you made my life to be.

And that day I will be filled with
Grief and left with self-pity
Regretting the failure to appreciate
Your presence
Your sacrifices
Your care
Your warmth
Your comforting presence.

Life takes us to the
Tallest of the tallest mountains
Deepest of the deepest oceans,
In all that journey
You were the one who held my hand
And stayed by my side.

You were the one who was there
When this vulnerable creature
Came out from living in a puddle of liquid
To this new terrain and took its first breath,
You were the one who was there
When I first took my first step in life
With my first cry and first laugh.

You were more than a person could ever be
My protector
My teacher
My doctor
My friend
My guide in life,

You were the one who
Felt the pain, when I wept
Felt the joy, when I laughed
Suffered when I fell sick,
Sacrificing your life
Your joy
Hiding your desires deep beneath
And making all of it a distant dream

On that cold day
No fire could keep me warm
No light could kill the darkness you left
And nothing could fill the emptiness you created,
That is the day I shall know your value
Realize what you were in my life,
And that day
I will not be able to accept that bone chilling cold,
Because my imagination today
Seizes to reach beyond this point,

I will never be able to return
What you have given me
You were more than any god
I have ever seen
Oh wait? !
You are the only god
That I have ever seen,
Another you is just an unimaginable dream.

Are you for real!
Or its just a dream!
And all this for what? ! ? ! ? ! ? !
