Mother Poem by Derek Brendish

Mother

Today is a very special day, my mother's birthday. Happy Birthday Mum. I wrote this poem just for you.

Mother

You were my soil, I grew in you
Nurtured in love? didn't have a clue
Folded within you, oblivious of pain
Hoping to join the world of the sane.

I kicked out inside you, you smiled with joy
I could hear you say, ‘I'm sure it's a boy'
Curled up in you, heard every heartbeat
Thumping on my cheeks, and my two little feet.

Then one day, the darkness broke
‘Oh! my baby! ', was that you who spoke?
The brightness, the noises, they frightened me
Everyone that day crowded around, ‘Let me see'.

Time flew so fast, I was soon a young lad
My demands grew, you gave me all you had
I saw you struggle, I'm sure at times you cried
I know your heart ached, but at least you tried.

Then one day, the calling came
Too early for us, we felt the pain
We could see you suffer all with a smile
You somehow knew you would go in a while.

I know you're up there looking down with love
We have nothing to worry with you there above
And when I look up to the sky, I know you're fine
Mama, sweet mama of mine.
