Maybe I'M A Cornball Poem by Mary Nagy

Maybe I'M A Cornball

My friends call me a cornball.
They think I'm such a nut
just because I speak my mind
and say it from my gut.

If I'm happy I will tell them
''Oh man, life sure is great! ''
But when I'm sad I make a point
to just communicate.

My heart has been an open book
for as long as I could speak.
I feel the need to ''get it out''.
Does that make me a geek?

Go ahead, call me a cornball.
That's good enough for me.
I just can't hide my feelings
but, that's what makes me... ME!

Well...you're the one who turned me on to rhyme, Mary! Between you and Herbert...I've learned just what type of skill is actually involved in the construction of a tight rhyme....you're a natural...oh yes, and a cornball! ; -)

Excellent Mary. This ought to be recited on a stage by a nine year old girl. The rhythm would be perfect. H

Mary My friends call me a crank, because I still act like a child, maybe this is why I love your work, so lets be cornballs together. cheers Sylvie

Great poem! I get the same comments from my friends. I will not allow that to change who I am though. I'll just continue to be ME because that's what I do best. Thanks for sharing. Shelia*

Yeah, that was really what I meant....I've never seen the word 'mawkish' but I see it relates to being excessively sentimental. (As for the 'unsophisticated' part....well...) Yup, that's exactly what I meant. I wrote the word 'cornball' because that IS what they call me. My friends as well as family feel the need to call me a cornball almost daily. I am too often caught up in what 'the other guy' is probably feeling and I bring it home to my family.........they consider that 'cornball'. Thanks for commenting! Sincerely, Mary

I like the sentiment you express of speaking your mind, but that's not what 'cornball' means. It means mawkish and unsophisticated. I don't think that's what you meant to say about yourself, is it?
