Look Back Poem by Noell Staton

Look Back

What do you know of my life?
Why do you think you’d understand?
Is it because you’re smart and thoughtful?
Or maybe because you’re always there?
Always at my side, pestering me to no end,
Repeating to me that “It can’t be that bad.”

Who do you think you are to tell me these things?
What gives you the right?
I never asked for you to hang around.
Never were you forced to wait for me.
How many times did I tell you to leave,
Only for you to be there again the next day?

Why are you so patient?
What keeps you sane?
So often have I let you down,
And forced to carry the load alone.
Yet still you stay.
And all my attempts to send you running,
Have only strengthened your resolve.

These were the questions I asked myself,
When you first came into my life.
So long had I been alone,
That I refused to accept your new role in my life.
But that was many years ago.
Back when we were kids.

Now I look back on those days,
And wonder if I was insane?
Did I not see my own hurt?
How badly I needed a friend?
I didn’t, but you did.
And for that, I’m forever grateful.

Thank you for never giving up
And trying to understand.
Thanks for all the comforting words
That helped me deal with life.
It is only because of you that I live today.
So thank you my forever friend,
For being the best anyone could have.
