Kingston upon Hull (i /ˌ kɪ ŋ stə n ə pɒ n ˈ hʌ l/ king-stə n ə -pon hul) , usually referred to as Hull, is a city and unitary authority area in the ceremonial county of the East Riding of Yorkshire, England.[2] It stands on the River Hull at its junction with the Humber estuary,25 miles (40 km) inland from the North Sea.[2] Hull has a resident population of 258,700 (2008 est.) . Hull was an early theatre of battle in the English Civil Wars.[5] Its 18th-century Member of Parliament, William Wilberforce, played a key role in the abolition of the slave trade in Britain.[
