Indian Housewife Poem by Madathil Rajendran Nair

Indian Housewife

Rating: 4.3

With the batter
And the ladle
On the pan
She drew a picture
As her toes did do
On the floor
A dream unknown
Humming a Tamil song

Her sweat longed
For her man
Yet to return from work
As the evening collapsed
Into uneven darkness
That knew no heart

Pancakes and pancakes
Made she with vengeance
Stacked them on plate
And waited for her man

He came all sweat
Inebriate to hilt
Went to bed
Snored and bored the night
She wept beside

The Indian housewife
Who drew her dreams
On silly pans
That fried dosas
And cried all night

Wind and cloud
Do you mind
Giving her company
This hapless night?

It is a real tragedy that many a dreams of an Indian house wife are burnt to ashes by inebriated husbands.

Those are two souls each in one's own world. The poem shows all the intensity that is happening in the kitchen and does not say what happened to the other person during that time. Office, boss, traffic, and all the trials and tribulations seem to have consumed the man. I can visualize such situations anywhere in the world. Beautiful images are presented. Please write a poem on what would have happened on the other side.

Kindly read my poem Shoddy Bar where the other side has perhaps received justice.

A typical Indian house wife born to sacrifice and keep all her emotions bottled inside ;lamenting over her fate and succumbing to it. Thanks for the beautiful piece

What a hapless plight for many an Indian woman! She languishes in the kitchen cooking on end with no quality time left for her! Yet she is hopeful of relieving her boredom in the loving presence of her husband. But at the end, when he arrives late from work inebriated and goes straight to bed and snores off, think of her frustration! Beautifully pictured!
