In The Faintly Lit Restaurant Poem by Gert Strydom

In The Faintly Lit Restaurant

(After Chris Lombard)

In the faintly lit restaurant there are moments that couples do share
when a pianist plays ballade pour Adeline,

an immoral night is the memory of an elder
when in lust he looks at a lonely woman,

two old ladies with purple hair gossip about the pastor's wife
where they do trust her with no man,

a love-struck girl plays tickle-toe with her boyfriend
and her teeth do gleam whither than pearl,

a widow cries in her sorrow,
in this life she and her love is apart.
