If Only They Knew Poem by Zonun Ralte

If Only They Knew

Rating: 5.0

Another suicide in the city
Another precious soul-
Felt compelled to end its own life
What a heart rending story-
To wake up to
In this city of suicide!

Didn't they know
That somewhere across the city
Are people whose hearts tighten with a grip
Each morning at the sight of the paper
Reporting yet another one!

Didn't they know
That a precious soul being taken by its own hands
Breaks the hearts of millions!
Didn't they know
There is hope!

If only they knew
That noone is ever alone in his pain
In her struggle!
When there seems to be no more light-
At the end of the tunnel
Somewhere beyond the realm of our own lives
Is a force - the hearts of a billion souls beating
Crying out to one another
'Don't give up! Keep fighting'

If only they knew
That people they have never met
Or known in their life
Would be grieving for them
Asking - Why? Why did you give up?

If only they knew
They were never alone!

(This poem is dedicated to all the souls that have departed the city of Bangalore as a result of suicide.

It is so sad and painful to hear about someone committing suicide for whatever reason. No amount of argument or counseling, if any, can effectively counter the emotional trauma afflicting a tormented soul, no matter what age-group or socioeconomic background he or she belongs to. You have so deftly analysed the situation. Thanks. I quote a couple of lines: Crying out to one another / 'Don't give up! Keep fighting'
