If At First You Don't Succeed, Write, Write, Write Again! Poem by Denis Martindale

If At First You Don't Succeed, Write, Write, Write Again!

Yes, if at first, you don't succeed,
You're not alone at all,
Yet writers know what thoughts to heed
When each one pays a call.
Don't think fast thoughts! Let each draw near,
Don't rush from line to line,
Or else the best could disappear
Without a single sign.
We walk a single street each time
And talk a single word,
We contemplate a single rhyme
Before a phrase gets heard.
Recite the verses one by one,
Yet not fast as we can,
While editing must still get done,
We've got the time to plan.
To some, I know, it's somewhat strange,
When editing takes hold,
And many poets rearrange
What first seemed good as gold.
It's good if we write on the spot,
Or quickly type words out,
Reciting lines improves a lot,
Of that, there proves no doubt.
Yet Grammarly can underline
Some query now and then,
Perchance to make a poem shine
In ways beyond our ken.
So that's the reason and the rhyme,
The process I best choose,
Towards success, time after time,
Each time I share Good News!
