Helpless Observer Poem by John Wollenzien

Helpless Observer

Seeing her with another
Though unsure of the feelings
If it is just the alcohol
or something more

Constant flirting
A playful shove and giggle
Heart gently breaking
With each laugh

No eye contact
So little being said
Attempt to speak
Never heard

So much to say
Never enough time
No want to listen
Passive, bored face

Attempt at humor
Mistaken for rudeness
Nothing gained
Something lost

Watching them
The constant risk
Unable to speak
Heart in my throat
