Challenger Poem by John Wollenzien

Challenger

The glinting sunlight
Reflecting off of the snow
A perfect paw print

Left behind by them
A graceful she-wolf and pup
Going to their den

A sound behind you
There stands her mate, an Alpha
And the rest of them

One with black muzzle
Another with (a) broken ear
You are outnumbered

One dashes at you
The male with green emerald eyes
Slashes at your leg

Narrowly dodging
Snapping at his exposed neck
Getting only fur

Another attack
A searing pain in your side
Blood spatters the snow

You do not relent
Just catching one by the tail
Taking it with you

Moving your head up
The Alpha stalking forward
Directly at you

Tooth and claw strike out
The savage growl and snapping
The mighty Alpha

A horrid mistake
You realize as snow meets you
A warming blanket

Looking up once more
She walks over and nuzzles
All the mortal wounds

Sitting on the snow
Looking up and lamenting
The death of her son
