Growing Up...I Recall Poem by Theodora (Theo) Onken

Growing Up...I Recall

Rating: 5.0

Sweet - gingerbread kisses after my nighttime prayer
Awaking to a butter yellow sun - with hope every day
Games of 'HopScotch' 'til day was near done
Seemingly carefree come what may...

Playing 'tag' and 'hide & seek' in the deep evergreen
Treats of 'ice cream' that melted way too soon
Dressing up and playing house with my dolls
So much 'neath Seattle's lemon yellow moon;

There were many trips to the beach
Summertime swims at 'Seward Park'
Splashing in Lake Washington's sapphire blue waters
Or riding our 'summertime' bikes 'til near dark;

Growing up with card table hand made tents
Sleeping out 'neath a blanket of diamond studded stars
Rainbows following many a Seattle rain...
And at 15 driving around in a 'Hot' gold coloured car...

From early childhood to my first love...
All magical moments i now confess
They are some of what is left of my youth-filled treasures
As i only hold on to the very, very best! ! ! .

Theo, you enchanted me with the very first words of your poem- - - - Sweet - gingerbread kisses after my nighttime prayer Awaking to a butter yellow sun - with hope every day Games of 'HopScotch' 'til day was near done- - - - - - - - - - - - - - You know how to engage the reader in your world while at the same time they re-engage with their own..The world is a fiercesome place to live but you just reminded us of the joys we had in it when we were young and had total trust that Mom and Dad and life itself would not harm us. I enjoyed revisiting that time witth you and your kind soul. This is very well written my good friend and I am glad you shared it with us. I needed a Joy in Living fix today! ! ! A 10 for sure! ! !

Susan, oh, Susan, thank you so! Yes, it was a better time...a safer time...and much simpler time; We were, indeed, blessed to have grown up in that era...you are such a dear. Your reviews give me hope because i consider you to be one if not the best poet on this site. Thank you, thank you, thank you, Susan! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
