Goodbye, My Friend Poem by Michelle Rainey

Goodbye, My Friend

(Dedicated to Grayson Wolpert who changed our lives forever)

I walked to the graveyard to meet up with my friend
The gravestone read Grayson Wolpert
Why God did her life have to end
She rose up like a ghost from the dirt
She looked at me and yelled
You just woke me up!
Sorry bout that I replied
But I just came here to talk
I miss you I told her
She laughed I miss you too
So how was your day she asked
I looked down at my shoes
My day wasn’t too great
You see I just found out some bad news
What happened she asked
A friend of mine died
She was a really beautiful girl
Golden hair
Blue-green eyes
She was strong like iron
And yet weak like a child
Her humor made me fall to the ground, gasping for breath
Her tears made me cry, soaking my shirt
She was calm like a brook
Yet fierce like fire
She was full of pain
Which tore at her soul
She was full of joy
Shining like the sun it was impossible to miss
Ask anyone she knew
She was a skilled poet, writer cook, and horseback rider
She was gifted with an ear for music, and a heart to serve
She talents were innumerable
But there was one I won’t ever forget
She was a gift from God
She was a skilled best friend
Wow this girl sounds amazing
My friend did shout
Yeah she really was
I responded looking as my face grew somber
What’s wrong asked my friend
Well, I replied
I wish I told my friend I loved her more often
I wish I told her that everyone loved her so much
I wish I told her every day how truly amazing and incredible she was
I wish I told her before she ascended to heaven above
But I didn’t
I hate wishing, it’s a waste of time!
Then go, said my friend
You must leave me behind
Tell all your friends of this love and how you feel
And then there will be no more wishing
No more regrets
I looked at my friend
The tears started gushing
She stared back at me and asked
Friend why must you cry
Because my friend
It is time for me to leave
I must tell you goodbye, my friend
And that I wish you well
I’ll see you soon
But till then, my dear friend
Goodbye

The loss of a friend is one of the hardest things to deal with. I wrote a poem called Matt about a friend who passed. Great poem.

Sending you hugs Michelle. We loved her very much also for many reasons, but mostly because of her genuine kindness toward Alexander. Thank you fro sharing your beautiful words.
