God, The Bookkeeper Poem by Lewis Eron

God, The Bookkeeper

Dear God,
Heavenly Bookkeeper
You better not err this year.

You need to update your equipment
Your angelic clerks could use an in-service on the new software
And your investigators need to be better supervised.

I know that Divine Knowledge is not what it use to be
Certain things are just unknowable
And what is “beshert” for the coming year
Is as reliable as a long-term weather forecast,
Although global warming,
Unlike death,
May still be avoidable

So what if the Book of Life is more like actuary tables
Than a prescription,
At least help me play the odds
For the best likely outcome.

I’ve heard that your suggest
moral fiber, spiritual exercises,
And a daily prayer regime.
A good attitude can help
As does a friendly disposition.
But don’t make it too hard to smile

So as your open the Book of Prognostications
I’ll try to remember you’re a better statistician than a prophet
The future is a card game
Just wish me luck as I play my hand.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
The traditional image is that on Rosh HaShanah, the Jewish New Year, the heavenly account books are opened, and on Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, they are sealed. The fate of all creatures is determined. What does all that mean in a world were direct causality is of limited help in understanding how creation works?
