Flanigans Meadow Poem by Theodora (Theo) Onken

Flanigans Meadow

Rating: 5.0

She was the very essence of Spring
A swirl of newborn feathers-a sweet baby dove
Alone in an abandoned nest in Flanigans Meadow
Simply a heavenly whisper of unconditional love!

Her thankful chirps warmed both of us daily
Her very presence brought forth a divine tranquility
She became our purpose-another reason for our being
She filled our home with an ambience of sheer serenity.

We named her 'Angel'
We watched her grow her heavenly wings
Her first flight was in our den-she simply shimmered
Filled us with pride and the happiness it brings

We knew that the day was nearing
When she would fly Flanigans Meadow free
Breaking our hearts-such a bitter sweet day
Knowing that our forever time with her was not to be.

Today, her absence pulls at our hearts daily
Perhaps, we will never understand the reasons why
After eating seeds on our patio day after day for weeks
And then one day- gone- with nary a coo goodbye.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
My husband and i rescued an abandoned baby dove from its nest. We raised her by hand feeding with a dropper every 3 hours or so with a special baby bird formula. Got her a beautiful blue cage. She slept with us in it at night. We would let her out and encourage her to try out her wings- she began to fly a little every day- short trips from my husbands lap to his shoulder. Soon, she was flying in our den. She had plenty of room as it has cathedral ceilings. Every day she brought us joy - with her love nuzzles and sweet chirps after feedings. We knew the day was nearing-to set her free-she soared but always showed up about 10 AM in the morning and again around 5 PM at night. Other birds would try to eat the seeds but she would fight them off with her wings. She went missing the end of May. All of the other doves are still here as are the robins, the crows, the grackles, the blue jays...we miss her so much and pray that she is alright somewhere-and that someday she will return to us again.

I am glad you shared the story of that lovely dove and her rescue. I want to believe that she is doing whatever is natural to doves- -taking a trip, or establishing new grounds that are hers instead of remaining in an over-crowded one [who knows about the territorial instincts of doves]. But judging from the return every spring of doves to our evergreen trees, I have huge hope you will see her next spring with her mate whereupon they will nest and raise their babies and then one day they will be gone and return only the next spring... bless your loving hearts for rescuing her and I pray you will be blessed by her return next spring.... hmmmm, it would be interesting if she tries to nest inside your house! ! ! Love this poem- -there is so much compassion in it as there is in its author.!

Susan, my dear sweet Susan, thank you! From everything i have read-they usually arrive here in and around April and hang around till late August..some even stay around yearly. It has been very hot here in Texas but so far the birds are alright..they use the birdbath a lot. We have an 8 year old oak, a ten year old mulberry that the doves love, a huge weeping willow...and a Crepe Myrtle- which they seem to love as well. We have a yard full of birds of all kinds-many different types of Doves too. Also, there are usually 3 or 4 squirrels running around. Unfortunately, Doves cannot see at night that is why they stay put in trees-once the sun begins to go down, , , we have a neighborhood full of cats as well..occasionally a skunk makes visits...so, there are predators in the midst. Praying like crazy that she just wanted a change from the over crowding of our yard and that she will return. Can't imagine her building a nest in our home but can picture her and her mate building one very close to our sliders near the patio. Thank you dear heart for stopping by and reading and commenting-your words mean so much to me- because they come from a heart of pure gold - and a most brilliant writers mind.
