Every Day Of The Week: My Life Poem by Paula Glynn

Every Day Of The Week: My Life

MONDAY

The official working day is Monday
Getting quickly washed and dressed
In the tiring and lethargic early morning
The bathroom always cold that time of day
Whether scorching sun or cold snow
Temperatures above or below
Hot in the sweaty summer
Freezing cold in the winter snow
Frazzled parents and noisy kids
Packed in the predictable car ride
Whether the car large or small
Whether kids happily short or tall
The school day begun on Monday
The office day also begun on Monday.

TUESDAY

Another day in the busy office
Keeping paying the regular bills
Keeping paying for the kids lifestyle
Now settled into the working week
No matter the weather outside
No matter wanting to lie in the cosy bed
And resting your weary head
Not being part of the world
But from a distance viewing it instead
Through the house window
Watching the world move itself along
Seemingly easily but appearances deceptive
And food is put on the table
Orange juice and toasted bread
Even a hash brown and fried egg
That settles normal morning hunger.

WEDNESDAY

The day the magnificent magazine
Just 17 is sold in the corner shop
Every Wednesday like clockwork
Sugar magazine sold every month
Also like clockwork
Teenage girl magazines exciting
When read with friends at school
When pored over at night in bed
Relishing fantastic fashion
And brilliant beauty advice
Looking for the perfect Collection 2000 lipstick
From a nearby miscellaneous shop
Wanting that particular pink lipstick
And also loving free gifts
From them: like popular lipsticks
Or tantalising tarot cards
Even supplement magazines
Of the same magazine:
Whether short stories
Of real life or even fiction
Or anything else for that matter
Helping teenagers sort their lives
And find their place in the world.

THURSDAY

The day is social club day
And also in the evening
The community centre popular
With many people of the town
Enjoying sitting with good friends
Talking and laughing, quiet and loud
About relationships and situations
That seem to always crop up
But friends will be friends
Offering support and loyalty
Never betraying confidences
Or hopes, promises and dreams
Told in secure secret
Making connections with people
Bonding and caring
No one needing to be upset or lonely.

FRIDAY

Today is grocery shopping day
Going to Tesco and purchasing
Various foods and beauty items
In the comfortable family car
That makes doing the shopping
Seem like the distance much less far
Also eating a pleasant lunch
And spending time in the sunny garden
With a visit from the neighbour's cat
She laying there having a well deserved nap
In the evening to eat fish and chips
A traditional thing
Started from years and years ago
For reasons I don't know
But every family has their quirks
And their habits:
Not all loving families the same.

SATURDAY

A typical Saturday morning routine
Is drinking rich caffetterie coffee
And eating a peach and passionfruit yogurt
In the designer dining room
Vibrant and deep paintings on the wall
That many do recall
From their artistic studies
Even when underneath the moon
With the warm morning sun
Pouring through the windows
And fresh air waking the senses
To later go clothes shopping
And spend hard earned cash
Buying stylish dresses and skirts
Buying men's wear for dad
And funky and cool presents for the kids
Also wandering around beauty aisles
Admiring the pretty lipsticks
And skin smoothing foundations
And smelling absolutely gorgeous perfumes
That enchant with their seductive scents.

SUNDAY

Having a long lie-in on a Sunday morning
Then eating a full English breakfast
Having a luxurious bubble bath later in the day
Then going on the bicycles
With a sturdy safety helmet
Cruising around the parks in town
And past the freshwater rivers
The fields green with summer grass
Not complete without vanilla ice cream
Almost a scent of nature's perfume
Enjoying being young and free
Not living in forever misery
To then later eat a roast dinner
And wash up dirty crockery afterwards
Clearing the kitchen of inevitable mess
And leaving the night to go on
Then start again on Monday
Doing it all again and with grace
Knowing the soul is wise and strong.
