Essex Girl Poem by Paula Glynn

Essex Girl

You can take the girl out of Essex,
But you can't take Essex out of the girl,
As that tired old saying goes,
For years ago I had been an Essex girl,
I knew all the slang,
Knew how to do my thing,
And talk Essex lingo like a pro,
But now I have grown,
And that has all changed,
I'll always be proud to have been born there,
Even though I was friends with people who still swear,
But I grew up in that special county,
I grew up street-smart,
And learnt how to handle tricky situations,
But Essex isn't a bad place,
Even though I won't be moving back there,
But people are people:
No matter where you go,
So have your preconceptions,
And I'll let you know,
Don't misjudge me because of my accent,
As I am as human as you,
And know as much as you,
And to my Essex girl roots I'll be true,
Because I may not wear black mini skirts,
Blow pink bubblegum or smoke,
But I am tough and know how to handle a joke,
For I am an Essex girl through and through,
Always being upfront and speaking my mind,
Just keeping myself busy,
For I am from that cosmopolitan place,
And I'll never regret my childhood,
Where I learnt all I know,
And a whole lot more.
