Elements Poem by Jayson Howard

Elements

I cannot express,
what goes on in my head.
All aspects of life,
and all the glamour of death.
What tides me over is,
such ignorant bliss.
But there’s warmth I’ll miss…
I can’t shoulder this.

If I don’t play with fire,
I won’t be burned.
If I stay away from water,
there’s no chance I’ll drown.
But if it’ll bring you peace,
then I promise thee,
next time you’ll see me,
I’ll be six feet underneath.

I cannot forgive,
the pain I’ve dealt.
All the wasted breaths,
with no sense of self.
What tides me over is,
what comes next,
what I express.
The warmth I’ll miss.

If I don’t play with fire,
I won’t be burned.
If I stay away from water,
there’s no chance I’ll drown.
The earth keeps me grounded,
it forges my heart.
And the wind will whisper,
of our time apart.

And if it’ll bring you peace,
then I promise thee,
next time you’ll see me,
I’ll be six feet underneath.
When the time comes,
the elements will take my soul.
As long as you’re calm,
and send me off, I will surely go.
