David And Goliath Poem by John Lyday

David And Goliath

A lithesome youth takes to the field.
A stouter heart no man could wield.
Alone he stands against a host.
In front, a single guard they post,
the all-time champion of utter war.
His name is etched in martial lore;
a mighty bear in battle gear,
a giant warrior for all to fear.

Ferociously, Goliath attacks.
David stands but still reacts.
A leather talisman on which to cling,
like a baton, he twirls his sling.
The swirling tempo of his song erupts.
Death is the music that he conducts.
Within a beat, the stone is cast.
Immortal man is dead at last.

A beautifully written modern tribute to an old bible story. Very eloquently expressed with rhyme, wit and obvious talent. Thank you for sharing :)

The conductor/music imagery considerably enhances this poetic telling and helps create a crescendo effect to match the climax... very devious..

I like this one. I'm always a sucker for a good rhyming pattern. I see lots of banter on the forum about rhyme - v - prose. It aint a competition. This is an old tale beautifully reconstructed in modern language. Very enjoyable read Best Steve

I loved it almost as great as being told by the Bible itself.
