Chemical Icarus Poem by Brigid Walshe

Chemical Icarus

Indestructible.
Indomitable.
The spirit of life shone.
Temptation dressed in friendly garb,
Stalked,
Pounced,
captured.
Stolen by foolish choice.
The child inside is lost.
Candy wrappers,
aluminium foil,
lollipops,
swollen veins.
Innocence engulfed by need.
Peace an elusive path.
A picture, a memory that never ages.
Join all the babes of our failures.
Let your spirit fly free.
Your magical wings
will never burn.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
I wrote this following the death of young man, not even left his teens, death due to a drug overdose. Known to my sons, there is alway that sorrow and fear, that perhaps it could be one of them, my heart aches for the waste
